Challenges Facing a Complementary-Systems Approach To Abstract and Episodic Speech Perception
In: Psychology Faculty Publications (2007)
Abstract: It has been nearly a decade since the publication ofGoldinger’s [4] Psych. Review paper in which hepresented his episodic theory of lexical access. Moreover, Goldinger’s (and others’) empiricalwork [3, 14] providing evidence for episodicrepresentations predates the formal presentation ofhis episodic theory. This is an appropriate time tonote how the field has progressed in the past decadewith respect to the debate over the nature of lexicalrepresentations. As evidenced by the two mainpapers, the emphasis is no longer on whether thereare abstract and/or episodic representations. Instead, the focus is now on the ideal framework that canaccount for their coexistence. Goldinger’spresentation of a complementary systems (hereafterCS) approach offers a glimpse into the directionthat many future investigations of lexicalrepresentation may be headed. I discuss some of thechallenges facing a CS approach in an effort tostimulate further discussion, and to help provide animpetus for future empirical, theoretical, andmodeling studies.
