Personality type of adolescents and their imaged personal heroes and heroines: A study of Myers-Briggs Type Indicator relationships.
Petersen, Patricia Ann.

Abstract:
Sorry, the full text of this article is not available in Huskie Commons. Please click on the alternative location to access it. ; 241 p. ; This study explored the relationship between the MBTI personality type of adolescents and their personal imaged hero/ines. Understanding the relationship provides a base for encouraging and empowering activation of the internal hero/ine in life, an entry for encouragement of full type development, and for increased self-esteem and self-efficacy.Types of 192 suburban Chicago high school freshmen and seniors were compared with their hero/ines. To determine the MBTI type of the hero/ine, written descriptions of the hero/ine imagery and forced choice selection of MBTI-congruent phrases were used.Categories of hero/ines included significant peers and adults (28.5%), literary and historical figures (14%), and athletes, performers, and media characters (18%). Unknown hero/ines included caretakers, adventurers, warriors, saviors, and romantic hero/ines (9%). Ideal and future selves, guides, wise and/or spiritual persons were archetypal or transpersonal hero/ines of other adolescents (28.5%). Several anti-hero/ines appeared. Hero/ines within categories were typologically diverse; no MBTI type of adolescents imaged primarily one category of hero/ine. Type and archetype relationships, if present, were unclear. The greater portion of the imagery content was personal rather than cultural, although many of the central themes were universal; the messages of hero/ine imagery were of consequence to the adolescent.Selection Ratio Type Table (SRTT) statistical analysis of subjects' types compared with hero/ines' types suggested moderate relationship. Comparison of adolescents subgrouped by MBTI type with their hero/ines indicated considerable relationship, and these differed from one type to another. INFP, ENFP, and ISFP hero/ines were most numerous. Nine types imaged statistically significant hero/ine types, five types were self-selected. Hero/ines of higher frequency types (e.g., INFP, ENFP) tended to be the same type; significant other typed hero/ines of MBTI subgroups tended to be feeling, perceptive, and/or introverted.Subgrouping by preferences of each of the type dimensions (E-I, S-N, T-F, J-P), found that introverted, intuitive, feeling, and/or perceptive subjects tended to image hero/ines with the same preferences. Extroverted, sensing, thinking and judging types generally did not.
