Abstract:
This experiment is part of a study that investigates the origin of segmented and linearised linguistic representations of holistic motion events. One of the universal organising properties of human languages is that holistic information is presented by breaking down the information into discrete segments and recombining them into linear sequences. This can be observed in signed and spoken linguistic representations of motion events that simultaneously include both the manner (e.g. spinning) and path (e.g. descending) of an event. An investigation of Nicaraguan Sign Language (NSL) (Senghas et al., 2004) showed that language-like segmentation of gestures for the semantic elements in motion-events is not always preferred in language production. Senghas et al. (2004) showed both adult speakers and the first generation of NSL signers expressed manner and path simultaneous in a single gesture, whereas the second and third generation of NSL signers showed stronger tendencies to linearly order separate gestures for ...
