Abstract: International audience ; This volume of studies on The Death of King Arthur gathers the papers of seven eminent specialists in Arthurian literature who met at Aix-Marseille University on 7 and 8 January 2022.It takes a fresh look at a major work of the Middle Ages which has always influenced contemporary culture. The various approaches are based on the most recent research. They shed new light on this novel, whose richness and complexity reflect - in a tangential way - the acute questions facing contemporary societies and which are presented in The Death of King Arthur: how to govern a society in decay? How can justice be established in a universe that is fragmenting into individualities that no longer form a social entity? This novel is a novel of political crisis, of the crisis of human responsibility in the face of its faults, of the end of societies. This book contains studies that take up again major issues such as the construction of the character, the novel's structuring through the technique of interweaving, the stylistics of the end that irrigates the writing of the novel, onomastics as a tool for the poetic construction of the work, the tensions between the letter and the voice, between the purity of the narrative line and the referential layering. The book ends with a perspective on the episode of Arthur's death in English literature.Contributors to this volume: Hélène Bouget (University of Western Brittany), Keith Busby (University of Wisconsin), Damien de Carné (University of Lorraine), Adeline Duperray-Richard (Aix-Marseille University), Christine Ferlampin-Acher (University of Rennes 2), Danièle James-Raoul (University of Bordeaux-Montaigne), Michelle Szkilnik (University of Paris 3-Sorbonne Nouvelle).
