Abstract:
A long tradition in social sciences has demonstrated the existence of in-group preferences in humans (Rusch, 2014). Presumably, humans have cognitive abilities to detect their and others’ group membership and adjust their behaviors accordingly. In particular, in-group preference refers to preferential cooperation with individuals perceived as members of one’s group, inflated perception of one’s group qualities, and, in some circumstances, hostile attitudes towards out-group members, although in-group preference and out-group derogation are not necessarily conflated (Pisor & Ross, 2021). Importantly, a vast literature from diverse disciplines demonstrates that the contour of group boundaries is not random. The perception of shared common culture is decisive in eliciting feelings of solidarity and common identity, especially in the case of large-scale groups, or “anonymous societies” (Moffett, 2013) in which most people never meet.
