Abstract:
In this study, we are interested in how race and gender influence perceptions of agency. The study questions if certain people are perceived as more agent-like than others even when executing symmetrical actions, based on social group. Firstly, we approach this from a similarity perspective: do we perceive people who are more like us to be more appropriate agents than those who are less like us. Secondly, we consider how societal biases might influence perceptions of agency: to what extent does living in a patriarchal society encourage us to perceive men as more agentive than women, and does living in a white-majority society influence us to perceive white people are more agentive than Black people? The results of this study will be used to further understand the findings of a previous experiment, Study 1 (the pre-registration for which can be found here: https://osf.io/jb24n/).
