Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between bilingualism and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) on 1) receptive vocabulary and 2) executive control: 1. Some findings indicate that vocabulary size may be diminished in bilinguals (Bialystok, Luk, Peets & Yang, 2010; Bialystok & Luk, 2012), as well as in those with ADHD (Bellani, Moretti, Perlini, & Brambilla, 2011; Mathers, 2006). What happens to language ability when one is bilingual and has ADHD? Bialystok et al. (2017) studied these factors in relation to English receptive vocabulary size and concluded that bilingualism and ADHD status do not interact, though bilingualism was related to smaller English vocabularies, and ADHD, surprisingly, was related to larger English vocabularies. These findings are hard to interpret given that bilinguals' vocabularies are distributed across two languages and that English was not always participants' dominant language.
