Abstract:
My project began with a question that led down several diverging yet related paths of inquiry: How did U.S. authors of what has been termed the “American Renaissance” negotiate the literary and cultural inheritances of the European Middle Ages in their works? What began as a study that traced allusions to medieval literature morphed into a broader assessment of the ways liberal American authors viewed their country in relation to the laws of feudal Europe. By placing the literary archive alongside historical research, I establish that the question of America’s relationship to the medieval past is more complex than we have come to assume. Nineteenth century thinkers understood their nation in terms of a dialectic between feudalism and liberalism, not only as a triumphant liberalism overpowering decadent feudal regimes. ❧ Medieval America: Feudalism and Liberalism in Antebellum U.S. Culture moves away from a narrative that emphasizes how the first generations of American authors distanced themselves from the ...
