A Case Study of Online English Teaching in Rural Schools Using Picture Books
; The purpose of this research is to investigate the current status of online English teaching through picture books in remote elementary schools in Kaohsiung City. After discussing the problems and solutions which were encountered during the implementation process, we’re able to provide suggestions for educational administrations, schools and elementary English teachers to explore when implementing online teaching. In this study, a qualitative research method was used to teach English picture books. The teaching was conducted by the university partners of English-related college students to the elementary school partners in this study area. Primary school students can read a different English picture book each week for eight weeks. This study was conducted in rural elementary schools in Taiwan through an online English digitization program (which were) sponsored by the Ministry of Education of Taiwan and Rotary International District 3510. In the implementation of the project, digital information technology was used to enable urban university partners to lead the rural elementary school partners to transform new visions of digital education in rural areas through interactive English digital learning. The researcher took a sample of 11 students from a rural elementary school in Kaohsiung City and conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews. This research used qualitative methods, and the results of the study revealed that primary and university students were appreciative with the online English digitization program which was sponsored by the Ministry of Education of Taiwan and Rotary International District 3510. The positive attitude of the university students also influenced the elementary school students. The teachers and administrators also believe that the online English digitization program in Rotary District 3510 can provide more channels and opportunities for children in rural areas to learn English, and the interaction with university partners can expand the horizons of children in rural areas effectively.
