Abstract:
Previous studies highlighted that, compared to monolinguals, bilingual children face greater challenges in everyday communication. Bilingual children have a smaller vocabulary sizes in each of their languages than monolinguals (Cattani et al., 2014) and bilinguals need to constantly monitor and track languages across different social contexts, interaction partners, and cultures (Kandhadai et al., 2014). Because of these challenges, bilingual children might rely less on what is being said verbally when it comes to understand their interaction partner and more on other communicative cues such as nonverbal information (Wermelinger et al., 2017). In particular, previous evidence suggested that bilingual children are more sensitive to nonverbal communication than monolingual children such as gaze direction or pointing (Brojde et al., 2012; Groba et al., 2018).
