Abstract:
Geographic distribution of human dialects has been extensively studied in the discipline of linguistic geography, and quantitative studies have often explored the correlation between linguistic distance and geographic distance. In this study, we will explore the spatial distribution of Japanese dialects by analyzing both empirical data and a network model of cultural evolution. On the basis of a nation-wide survey of Japanese dialects called Linguistic Atlas of Japan (LAJ) and its electric version Linguistic Atlas of Japan Database (LAJDB), we calculate the linguistic distance between survey locations and correlate it with geographic distance. On the other hand, we develop a network model whose nodes represent lattice sites assigned at a regular interval to all regions of Japan. Based on the geographic contact pattern among the lattice sites, we simulate the transmission, innovation, and mutation of dialect words on the land of Japan, and calculate linguistic distance between each node. The result shows that ...
