The Role of SLA Research in L2 Teaching: Reply to Sheen
Abstract:
This is a response to Sheen's (2002) critique of a review article on the relationship between second language acquisition (SLA) research and classroom second and foreign language teaching (Lightbown 2000). The review article was an update of an earlier one in Applied Linguistics titled ‘Great Expectations: Second Language Acquisition Research and Classroom Teaching’ (Lightbown 1985). The focus of the response is on clarifying points made in both the 1985 and 2000 articles and challenging some of Sheen's interpretation of those points. In particular, a distinction is made between the influence SLA research and theory have had on teaching and the influence of research and theory from other areas, including applied linguistics.
