A Research of Taiwanese College Students' Perceptions toward Using Multimedia in English Learning and Its Efficacy
; As the demand of English increases in the past decade, instructors throughout the world have been searching for effective teaching ways because the existing instructional materials have often been reported of failing to invoke the learners’ intrinsic motivation and genuine interests in learning a language. Multimedia integrated teaching thus became a popular way of teaching English. However, the students’ preferences and perceptions of using multimedia in learning haven’t been probed thoroughly. As a result, this study was aimed to explore Taiwanese college students’ perceptions toward using multimedia in English learning and its efficacy. There were six research questions probed: (1) What are Taiwanese English major students’ perceptions of learning needs in English? (2) What are Taiwanese non-English major students’ perceptions of learning needs in English? (3) What are the similarities and differences between the perceptions of learning needs between English major and non-English major students? (4) What are Taiwanese college students’ perceptions of using language learning apps based on English multimedia learning? (5) Are there statistically significant differences in ratings of motivation created by the learning materials used by students using language learning apps to learn English compared to students using traditional methods? (6) Are there statistically significant differences in scores on tests for students using language learning apps to learn English compared to students using traditional methods? There were 212 participants in this study, 106 from English department, and 106 from non-English department. This research used three questionnaires and tests to collect data, and the data were analyzed by SPSS. The findings revealed that most students think they need to learn daily English conversation and general English more often, and want to be able to fill out personal information in English. Moreover, most Taiwanese students have a high perception toward using language learning apps, and they think language learning apps are worth being integrated into the curriculum and can increase their motivation compared to using traditional learning methods. In addition, a positive correlation between the efficacy on tests results and using language learning apps in learning English was also inspected. Therefore, concluded that multimedia resources should be used for language learning, and language learning apps should be introduced to students thus to increase learning motivation and learning efficacy. Pedagogical implications, limitations of the study, and suggestions for future studies were presented in the following.
