Abstract:
This study aims to determine whether all-or-none forgetting of associative memories extends to multi-modal language learning. Evidence suggests that multi-element (location, person, object) episodic events, which require hippocampal binding during encoding, are bound together in memory via pattern completion (Horner & Burgess, 2013; Horner et al., 2014, 2015; Grande et al., 2019). Further, these memories are forgotten in all-or-none manner such that after a 24-hour or 1-week delay, forgetting seems to target entire events rather than individual elements within events (Joensen et al., 2019). Since lexical representations acquired in naturalistic settings are associated with rich multi-modal information about word context (e.g. visual and auditory form of the word, semantic associations, and associated environmental sounds) and lexical representations are processed in the hippocampus (Duff & Brown-Schmidt, 2012), a next step is to determine the associative structure of the mental lexicon.
