Abstract:
This study aims to determine whether the nature of forgetting for multi-modal lexical representations is influenced by the nature of encoding. Evidence has shown that elements of multi-element (location, person, object) episodic events are bound together by the hippocampus during encoding and are subsequently forgotten in an all-or-none manner such that forgetting targets the entire event rather than individual within-event elements (Horner & Burgess, 2013; Horner et al., 2014, 2015; Grande et al., 2019; Joensen et al., 2019). Recently, we have extended these findings to show that elements of multi-modal lexical representations are also bound together in memory immediately post-learning. However, we have also shown that in contrast to episodic memories, lexical representations are prone to forgetting-induced fragmentation unless there is an extra opportunity for retrieval practice immediately post-learning.
