Public responses to George Floyd's "I can't breathe"

Abstract:
Struktureller Rassismus in den USA ist ein allgegenwärtiges sozio-politisches Phänomen. Es ist daher nicht überraschend, dass sogar während der COVID-19-Pandemie und den Vorwahlen in den USA ein weiterer schwarzer U.S.-Amerikaner (Black American), George Floyd, durch einen Polizeibeamten getötet wurde. Dieser Vorfall wurde gefilmt und verbreitete sich daraufhin sofort global über soziale Medien; Proteste in zahlreichen U.S.-Städten und auf der ganzen Welt folgten. Da diese Tragödie große Unruhen auf nationaler sowie internationaler Ebene verursachte, wurde dieser Vorfall von einigen ehemaligen Präsidenten, dem Präsidentschaftskandidaten, dem amtierenden Präsidenten sowie nationale juristische Vereinigungen und U.S.-Botschafter in Presseerklärung angesprochen. All diese Statements scheinen den Ausdruck von Trauer und Empathie und Aufrufe zur Einigkeit und Solidarität zum Ziel zu haben. Dennoch oder gerade deswegen sind diese Presseerklärungen als Teil des politischen Diskurses anzusehen, da sie die Stellung ihrer Sprecher bzw. Verfasser als politische Akteure in einer Machtposition widerspiegeln im Gegensatz zu ihren Adressaten, dem amerikanischen Volk und insbesondere jene, die typischerweise von strukturellem Rassismus betroffen sind. Das Ziel der Studie ist es, aus einer sozio-linguistischen Perspektive, die Art und Weise, wie die politischen Akteure in dem Kontext der Tötung von George Floyd sich selbst und ihre Machtposition repräsentieren, Emotionen ausdrücken und ein Verhältnis zu ihren Adressaten in Texten des politischen Diskurses aufbauen. Der Textcorpus dieser Studie besteht aus zehn offiziellen Stellungnahmen, die einer Analyse von interpersoneller Bedeutung (Halliday 1985) und Appraisal-Theorie (Martin & White 2005) unterzogen wurden. Die daraus gewonnenen Erkenntnisse wurden in einem zweiten Schritt einer kritischen Diskursanalyse (Fairclough 2001) unterzogen, um sprachliche Manifestationen von Macht und Machtstrukturen in den Stellungnahmen darzulegen. ; Systemic racism has been an ever-present socio-political phenomenon. It is thus not surprising that even during the COVID-19 pandemic and the primary elections season yet another Black American was killed by a police officer. The incident was filmed and immediately spread globally on social media; protests in numerous cities in the U.S. and all over the world ensued. Since this tragedy caused great public unrest on a national and international level, many former presidents, the presidential candidate and the incumbent president felt the need to address this incident. However, national associations of defenders and attorneys and U.S. ambassadors to various countries issued press releases as well. All of these statements seemed to have the aim of showing empathy, expressing grief and calling for unity and solidarity in the country. Nevertheless, these statements are part of political discourse, as they represent the position of their speakers and writers as political actors in positions of power compared to their audience, the American people and those typically affected by systemic racism. The aim of this study is to investigate the ways how political actors represent themselves and their positions of power, express emotions and establish rapport with their audience in official press releases from a socio-linguistic perspective. The corpus for this study consisted of ten official press releases which were subjected to the analysis of interpersonal meaning (Halliday 1985) and Appraisal (Martin & White 2005). The obtained findings were then used for a critical discourse analysis to reveal the manifestations of power and power structures in their statements.
