Konkurrenz zwischen Wortbildung und Syntax ; Competition between word formation and syntax

Abstract:
Die Arbeit untersucht, ob und wie Komposita (z.B. 'Baumstamm') und Genitivkonstruktionen (z.B. 'der Stamm des Baumes, des Baumes Stamm') im Frühneuhochdeutschen und im Neuhochdeutschen im Zuge der Entwicklung von Fachtermini in der Wissenschaftssprache miteinander konkurriert haben. Bis zum 18. Jahrhundert wurde in Europa der Großteil an wissenschaftlichen Texten noch auf Latein verfasst. Erst im Übergang vom Frühneuhochdeutschen zum Neuhochdeutschen fand langsam Deutsch als Wissenschaftssprache Anwendung. Das für das Deutsche neue Register stellte den Autoren die Aufgabe, neue Fachtermini zu entwickeln, welche sich erst etablieren mussten. Zur Untersuchung dieser Problematik wird ein diachrones Korpus aus dem Bereich der Kräuterkunde (RIDGES Herbology) mit zusätzlichen Annotationsebenen versehen. Es werden alle Komposita und deren Orthographie sowie die Position der Genitive innerhalb einer Nominalphrase annotiert. Zusätzlich wird eine Klassifikation der Komposita hinsichtlich ihrer prototypischen Eigenschaften vorgenommen, da eine eindeutige Unterscheidung zwischen Komposita und Genitivkonstruktionen in frühneuhochdeutschen Texten häufig gar nicht möglich ist. Dies ist bereits ein Indiz für die Konkurrenz zwischen den beiden Strukturen. Nach einem theoretischen Überblick und der Darstellung der methodischen Vorgehensweise, folgen eine quantitative Analyse über den Entwicklungsverlauf der beiden Strukturen sowie ein Blick auf konkrete interessante Vorkommen im Korpus. Die Auswertung zeigt, dass bestimmte Komposita und Genitivstrukturen tatsächlich miteinander in Konkurrenz standen, da sie sich substituieren lassen und bedeutungsäquivalente Strukturen (z.B. 'Geruch des Knoblauchs' vs. 'Knoblauchgeruch') im Korpus häufig vorkommen. Es zeigt sich jedoch auch, dass nicht jedes Kompositum durch eine Genitivkonstruktion ausgetauscht werden kann, wofür vermutlich semantische Beschränkungen verantwortlich sind. ; This paper examines whether and how compounds (e.g. 'Baumstamm') and genitive constructions (e.g. 'der Stamm des Baumes', 'des Baumes Stamm') are competitive constructions in the development of scientific terms in Early New High German and New High German. Up until the 18th century most academic texts in Europe were written in Latin. It was only during the transition from Early New High German to New High German that the German language was started to be used in academic writing. Authors faced the task of inventing and establishing new academic terms, as the register of academic discourse was new to German. To examine this question, a diachronic corpus consisting of texts about herbs (RIDGES Herbology) is used and annotated with additional linguistic categories. All compounds and their orthography as well as the position of the genitives in nominal phrases are annotated. Furthermore, the compounds are classified according to their prototypical qualities because, sometimes, it is impossible to differentiate between compounds and genitive constructions in Early New High German texts. This already indicates a competition between both structures. Following a theoretical overview and the methodology, a quantitative analysis of the development of both structures as well as several interesting examples within the corpus are presented. The results show that certain compounds and genitive structures indeed co-occurred and used to be in competition because they are able to be substituted and structures with similar semantics (e.g. 'Geruch des Knoblauchs' vs. 'Knoblauchgeruch') frequently appear in the corpus. However, the corpus also shows that not every compound can be substituted with a genitive structure. This is a phenomenon which appears most likely due to semantic constraints.
