Stella Rambisai Chiweshe - The Queen of Mbira

Abstract:
Wie der Titel schon suggeriert, beschäftigt sich diese Arbeit mit der Frage, wie Stella Rambisai Chiweshe zur "Queen of Mbira" wurde. Die Mbira dzaVadzimu ist das Schlüsselinstrument der Shona aus Zimbabwe – ein sogenanntes Lamellophon. Dieses Instrument erfuhr durch die Kolonialherrschaft der Briten bzw. durch die damit verbundene Christianisierung im damaligen Süd-Rhodesien eine Verdrängung in wenige Reservoirs. Ausserdem wurde das Spiel der Mbira Frauen grundsätzlich untersagt. Es ist als kleines Wunder zu verstehen, dass die weltweit erfolgreichste Virtuosin dieses Instruments eine Frau ist. Dem Thema Gender kommt insofern eine besondere Stellung in diesem Werk zu. Die direkte Verwandtschaft von Stella Chiweshe zu den beiden AnführerInnen des Ersten Chimurenga, des Befreiungskampfes der Indigenen 1896/97, ist ein weiteres Thema. Das Musikinstrument erfuhr in den 70er Jahren eine Renaissance im Zuge des Zweiten Chimurenga: Die Ahnen-Geister Ambuya Nehanda und Sekuru Kaguvi, die schon die Medien im ersten Kampf possessierten, erhoben sich ein weiteres Mal. Der Name des Instruments übersetzt sich wörtlich mit "goldenes Maß der Geister" (Übersetzung des Autors), und ist das rituelle Instrument des sogenannten Mwari-Kultes, der seit etwa dem 16 Jhdt. besteht. Die große internationale Bekanntheit des Instruments – unter anderem auf das Wirken von Stella Chiweshe zurück zu führen – ist im konzertanten Rahmen der Weltmusik in den 80ern entstanden. Die tradierten Rituale und Zeremonien werden in Relation zu einem ethnohistorischen Kontext gebracht. Weiters wird dem Instrument musikwissenschaftliche Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt, wobei der Autor jüngste Kenntnisse mit dem bereits vorhanden body of knowledge vergleicht. Dieser Vergleich kulminiert in der Präsentation eines eigenen Notations–Systems, dass aktuellen Bedürfnissen von MusikerInnen gerecht wird und dennoch tradiertes Liedgut vermittelbar macht. Die Shona lernen an sich aural oder über Träume. Besondere musikanthropologische Beachtung kommt dem Metrum der Musik der Shona zu gute. Zählsilben und die Korrelation zur "taktangebenden" Kürbisrassel hosho werden analysiert. Texte einzelner ausgewählter Musikstücke von Stella Chiweshe werden mit ihren narrativ-biographischen Interviews verglichen. Diese Interviews wurden im Rahmen einer Feld(er)forschung im August 2008 in Berlin empirisch erhoben. Methodik und Praxis in den Forschungsfeldern werden in einem ausgedehnten theoretischen Teil transparent gemacht. Stella Rambisai Chiweshe deutet und interpretiert ihr eigenes Leben in direkten Zitaten, die der Autor mit einem gigantischen Archivmaterial des Labels Piranha und breit gefächerter Literatur ergänzt und vertieft. Weitere InformantInnen, die der Autor 2012 um Kooperation bittet, liefern letzte Details, die ein ganzheitliches Bild der Künstlerin, Schauspielerin, Autorin und Musikerin Stella Rambisai Chiweshe, der "Queen of Mbira", zeichnen. ; This work deals with the question how Stella Rambisai Chiweshe became "The Queen of Mbira, like the titel suggests. The mbira dzavadzimu is the key-instrument of the Shona people of Zimbabwe – a lamellophon. This instrument has suffered from ousting to a few reservoirs, due to the colonial rule of the British and christian missionary work. Furthermore playing the mbira was merely a male domain. Therefore it seems to be a miracle, that Stella Chiweshe has become the most successful virtuoso of the mbira dzavadzimu. Gender is a main issue of this work, concerning the traditional and the colonial context of the instrument. Direct relationship to both leaders of the First Chimurenga, the armed rebellion against British settlers in 1896/7, is a main topic of this work. The mbira experienced a renaissance during the Second Chimurgena in the 70s. The spirits of the great ancestors Ambuya Nehanda and Sekuru Kaguvi, who already were already possessing the leading mediums of the first war, raised up a second time. Mbira dzavadzimu translates literally as "golden measure of the spirits" (by the author), and is the main cultic instrument of the so called Mwari-Cult, that has been around since the 16th century. International recognition of the mbira in the world music circuit in the 80s can be traced to the work of Stella Chiweshe. Traditional rituals and ceremonies are put in relation to the ethnohistorical context. Concerning musicology, the author compares new findings with an already existing body of knowledge. This comparison culminates in the presentation of his own notation-system, which pleases innovators and traditionalist alike: The Shona usually learn their repertoire aurally or in dreams. Anthropologists of music may take a look at a new way of interpreting the Shona metrum and their way of counting beats. Syllables for counting are put in relation to the hosho, a pumpkin-rattle, that server as metronom. Specific texts of Stella Chiweshe are analysed in relation to her narrative-biographical Interviews, that were made during a empirical fieldwork conducted in August 2008 in Berlin. Methods and practices concerning the anthropological fields of the study are made transparent in an elongated theoretical chapter. Stella Rambisai Chiweshe speaks about and interprets her own live in direct quotation, which is completed by a gigantic amount of data, collected in the Piranha label-archive and in literature. In 2012 the author teamed up with several Shona informants to elaborate the last details for drawing a comprehensive picture of the life of the artist, acter, author and musician Stella Rambisai Chiweshe, the "Queen of Mbira".
