Metalepse und unzuverlässiges Erzählen
Rosina, Eva. - 2021
; I suggest a definition of metalepsis that requires a paradoxical structure in order to differentiate it from other phenomena of metafictionality. Further, I argue that only a transgression between the highest and another narrative level fulfils that requirement. Metalepsis is best seen as an event during the process of reading that is caused by signals in the text and that threatens the aesthetic illusion. As a reaction to such an event we may (1) give up on the aesthetic illusion and on treating the text as narrative, (2) integrate a different kind of logic into the diegesis that allows for causal loops and transgressions between narrative levels, or (3) attribute unreliability to the narrator of the metaleptic structure. In case (3), we save the aesthetic illusion and the pact with a narrator, except that now the pact holds with the implied author instead of the former narrator. In none of the cases does metalepsis continue to exist as paradox. It seems to disintegrate as soon as we rationalize it in any way. Therefore, metalepsis is better thought of as a moment in the process of reading than as a state in the text. Unreliable narration can have the same stabilizing function for other structures that potentially threaten the aesthetic illusion. It dissolves when dealt with, just as metalepsis does: By attributing unreliability to the highest narrator, they become a normal fictional character, whereas an implied author is introduced as reliable. The resulting static picture is a normal multi-level narration whereas the history of unreliable narration is undetectable a posteriori. The importance of the process of reading in the case of both metalepsis and unreliable narration plus the importance of signals in the text is the reason for an ongoing competition between rhetoric and cognitive approaches to unreliability: Both narratological traditions claim competence, but they fail to make their meta-theoretic premises (standards of objectivity/intersubjectivity) transparent.
