Abstract:
In non-English speaking contexts such as Thailand, English is taught as a foreign language (EFL) in which learning English situation relies more on reading than other skills. However, Thai students performed unsatisfactory level in reading because of the insufficiency of early reading skills. The focus of this study was on improving the ability of letter-sound correspondences related to decoding and blending skills among young Thai students by implementing a phonics instruction, Letters and Sounds. One-group pretest-posttest research design was used in this study. The participants, selected by convenience sampling, comprised 44 Grade 3 students in a public school in Phranakhon Si Ayutthaya province, Thailand. The instruments used in this study were the CORE Phonics Survey, an adaptation of Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS 1-3), and phonics-based lesson plans.
