Does determiner surprisal mediate correlation between explicit and implicit referential beliefs? ...
Pophristic, Stefan. - : Open Science Framework, 2022
Abstract: This study follows up on tests of an explicit linking hypothesis about the visual world paradigm applied to referential tasks: that proportion of looks to an object in a time window indicate a participant's belief that the object is the intended target. Previous studies have shown varying correlations between implicit beliefs as measured by eye movements, and explicit beliefs as collected in incremental decision tasks (Qing et al., 2018; Degen et al., 2021). The current study tests a hypothesis about variability in correlations: that the surprisal of observed linguistic forms in their contexts interacts with the extent to which language comprehension can proceed normally. In particular, we hypothesize that because surprising linguistic forms are harder to process (e.g., Levy 2008), more surprising linguistic forms in the visual world may lead to visual search behaviors that are not driven just by attempts to identify the target. For example, upon encountering a surprising form, participants may instead ...
