Abstract:
When confronted with an expression composed of more than one word, the lexicographer has to decide where, i. e. under which. entry, he will record it. His task would be easier if he knew where the dictionary user will look up collocations of different types. This article investigates which criteria native speakers of French and Dutch may have when looking up more or less fixed phrases in a monolingual dictionary. Frequency, word class and syntactic structure are taken into account and appear to be important, though not in the same way for different language groups. Systematic strategies seem to exist for each language group, but further research is needed.
