Abstract:
Some principles of psycholinguistic assessment of phonological awareness are illustrated by means of a case study. Zoe, who in the past had severe speech difficulties, at the age of 9 years 8 months presents with serious written language problems. We carried out a psycholinguistic assessment using a framework which comprises a list of questions designed to identify the levels of deficit underlying the child's difficulties. Results indicated that Zoe had not yet reached the Metaphonological Phase, which is characterised by phonological awareness and which most children reach by the age of 4 or 5. Analysis of reading and spelling errors suggests that these are linked to the underlying speech processing deficits
