Abstract: Strong evidence suggests that an enriching language and print environment at home is associated with improved language and literacy attainments in children. Current theorizing is limited by its focus on children from middle-class literate families growing up in industrialized, high-income country contexts that are characterized by access to useful resources and a unique set of practices surrounding print. Thus, for example, a distinguishing feature of the Home Literacy Model is ‘the idea that early home literacy experiences should be analyzed as a function of how much focus there is on the print itself’ (Sénéchal et al., 2017, p. 384). Such contexts contrast markedly with those in low- and middle-income (LMI) countries where child-rearing and socialization practices may or may not be print-focused and access to relevant literacy learning resources may be limited (e.g., few public libraries; little local language publishing, low literacy levels in family and community members, and the school language is not ...
