In: Global Tides (2022)
This article analyzes the connection between the linguistic phenomenon “Spanglish” and the sociological concept of the Third Culture Identity in the context of the use of code-switching and translanguaging by primary school students. It demonstrates that Spanglish is an expression of a both a hybrid lexicon and a hybrid identity. Although conventional pedagogy may sometimes seek to compartmentalize each language, the research presented in this study demonstrates that the linguistic contact between English and Spanish in the classroom and beyond may serve not as a crutch, but as a tool for identity expression and enrichment for bilingual students.
