Die Forschungsergebnisse, auf welchen er basiert, resultieren u.a. aus der Analyse ärztlicher Informationsschriften zur künstlichen Befruchtung, die für potentielle Patientinnen bestimmt sind. Die Sprache dieser Dokumente reflektiert nicht nur das soziale Beziehungsgefüge zwischen Ärztinnen und Patientinnen im hochtechnologisierten Bereich der Medizin, sondern verstärkt dieses auch, möglicherweise ist die Sprache für diese Beziehungen sogar konstitutiv. Der Textkorpus setzt sich aus englischen und französischen Texten zusammen, die aus Irland, Frankreich, Belgien und Großbritannien stammen. Die Texte zeigen einerseits viele Übereinstimmungen, wie es bei Fachjargon zu erwarten ist (Kittredge 1982), andererseits aber auch einige inhaltliche wie stilistische Unterschiede. Ein weiteres Ziel dieser Arbeit ist also die Erklärung dieser Unterschiede, die aber aufgrund des beschränkten Umfangs nur überblicksartiger Natur sein kann. Die inhaltlichen Differenzen zumindest scheinen bedingt durch die ökonomischen, politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Verschiedenheiten der in diese Forschung einbezogenen Länder. Stilistische Differenzen könnten auf Unterschiede kultureller Art, insbesondere dem Status von Wissenschaft und Medizin, zurückgeführt werden, da sie nicht nur aus den Unterschieden der beiden Sprachsysteme erklärbar sind."
