Abstract:
This thesis explores women’s textual production published in French anarchist press between 1885 and 1905. From a gender perspective, we examine the writings of women that have circulated in propaganda and literary journals influenced by anarchist ideas. Our demonstration is divided in three main parts, each comprising of two chapters, which follow a chronological order. In the first part, we retrace the gradual entry of women into propaganda newspapers at the end of the 1880’s. The first chapter studies the emergence of the anarchist movement and the militant activities that were organized by women. The second chapter examines the beginnings of women’s journalistic activity in anarchist newspapers. Louise Michel is an active contributor to these newspapers in which she publishes serial novels, tales and short stories. Several women also take the epistolary route to build their public image as activists. The second part of the thesis investigates women’s writings that were mostly published in French anarchist press between 1892 and 1896. The third chapter follows the writing practices adopted by women to shape an imaginary of action that is linked to the anarchist discourses on violence. Women use different strategies to appropriate a topic from which they should have been discarded in terms of gender stereotypes. In the fourth chapter, we look at the intimate testimonies and autobiographical writings in which they evoke their unique experiences of anarchism. The third part of the thesis focuses on the beginning of the twentieth century, when women try to take their place as intellectuals in anarchist press. In the fifth chapter, we look at the literary genders of criticism and literary history, as practiced by women in different publications. The final chapter examines women’s journalistic intervention in social surveys, which constitute a microcosm of anarchist practices and discourses. It ends with a study of the controversy surrounding feminism, which arose in Le Libertaire in 1904. ; Cette thèse explore la production textuelle des femmes diffusée dans la presse anarchiste française entre 1885 et 1905. À partir d’une perspective de genre, nous examinons les écrits féminins qui ont circulé dans les journaux de propagande et dans les revues littéraires d’orientation libertaire. Notre démonstration est divisée en trois grandes parties, comportant chacune deux chapitres, qui suivent un ordre chronologique. Dans la première partie, nous retraçons l’entrée progressive des femmes dans les journaux de propagande à la fin de la décennie 1880. Le premier chapitre raconte l’émergence du mouvement anarchiste en insistant sur les activités militantes qui ont été organisées par les femmes. Le deuxième chapitre porte sur les débuts de l’activité journalistique des femmes dans les journaux de propagande. Louise Michel collabore activement à ces journaux dans lesquels elle publie des feuilletons romanesques, des poèmes, des contes et des nouvelles. Plusieurs femmes empruntent également la voie épistolaire pour se construire une image publique en tant que militantes. La deuxième partie de la thèse s’intéresse aux écrits de femmes qui ont, dans leur majorité, été publiés entre 1892 et 1896. Le troisième chapitre porte sur les pratiques d’écriture empruntées par les femmes pour mettre en forme un imaginaire de l’action qui rappelle les discours anarchistes sur la violence. Les femmes emploient différentes stratégies d’écriture pour s’approprier un sujet duquel elles devraient être écartées, du point de vue des clichés de genre. Dans le quatrième chapitre, nous abordons les témoignages intimes dans lesquels elles évoquent leurs expériences singulières de l’anarchisme. La troisième partie de la thèse porte sur le début du XXe siècle, moment lors duquel les femmes font entendre leur voix en tant qu’intellectuelles. Dans le cinquième chapitre, nous nous penchons sur les genres de la critique et de l’histoire littéraire, tels qu’ils sont pratiqués par les femmes dans différentes publications. Le dernier chapitre examine les interventions journalistiques des femmes dans les enquêtes sociales, qui constituent un microcosme des pratiques et des discours anarchistes. Il se clôt sur une étude de la polémique autour du féminisme, survenue dans Le Libertaire en 1904.
