Abstract:
; This thesis aims at discussing different approaches to teaching and assessing oral fluency in order to show a direct link between second language teachers’ concepts of fluency and its assessment. Therefore, it was necessary to review relevant theoretical research findings from the field of Second Language Teaching (SLA) and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) to develop a framework of features of a fluent language user. Moreover, it was important to investigate if this theoretical framework was practical for actual use in the SL classroom. It was discovered, that the various definitions of fluency vary greatly and were not all appropriate for use in practice. It could be argued that there even is a gap between research and pedagogy. As opposed to temporal measures of fluency, this thesis focuses on more practice-oriented features of oral fluency and expects that Austrian language teachers rather make us of fluency in its broader sense (Lennon 2000). In order to draw a link between theoretical construct and teaching practice, this thesis, reviews several possibilities to implement oral fluency in foreign language classroom practices. Therefore, qualitative interviews were conducted with five Austrian English language teachers in secondary education to discuss their approaches of teaching and ultimately assessing oral fluency. The results show that their concepts add to the multidimensional view of oral fluency presented in the literature review. Furthermore, it becomes apparent that teachers do not assess fluency at all. This observation corresponds with their view of fluency as something more akin to global language proficiency. Overall, it could be summarized that oral fluency still is perceived intuitively and teachers rather rely on their gut feeling than on theoretical background knowledge when it comes to the assessment of oral fluency.
