Diesbezüglich haben sich in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten eine Bandbreite von Sprachwandeltheorien aus sehr unterschiedlichen Lagern angesammelt. Insbesondere das Phänomen des Lautwandels scheint sich einer Erklärung größtenteils zu entziehen. Daher ist es Gegenstand dieser Arbeit, drei einschlägige Theorien verschiedener Schulen (strukturalistischer, pragmatischer und evolutionstheoretischer Abstammung) hinsichtlich ihrer Erklärung lautlichen Wandels hin zu untersuchen. Dabei dient die altenglische Vokalbrechung als exemplarischer Lautwandel, der mithilfe dieser Theorien erklärt werden soll. Zunächst wird Sprachwandel als primär diachrones Phänomen lokalisiert, das synchron als sprachliche Variation sichtbar wird. Es werden wichtige historische sowie aktuelle Tendenzen in den sprachwandeltheoretischen Diskussionen umrissen und die altenglische Vokalbrechung vorgestellt. Daran schließt sich ein Kapitel zur Erklärbarkeit von Wandel an. Im Hauptteil der Arbeit werden die drei Theorien vorgestellt und auf die Vokalbrechung angewendet. In einer abschließenden Diskussion werden einige Aspekte der Theorien hinsichtlich ihrer Anwendbarkeit kritisch beleuchtet und vergleichend gegenübergestellt. Der Vergleich der Markiertheitstheorie von Wurzel (1994), der Theorie der „unsichtbaren Hand“ sowie des evolutionären Ansatzes von Croft ergibt, dass sie in unterschiedlichem Grade vom Gegenstand Sprache abstrahieren, gemäß ihrer sprachtheoretischen Fundierung. Es wird gezeigt, dass eine Gemeinsamkeit u.a. in der Strategie besteht, teleologische Erklärungen auszuschließen. ; One task of historical linguists is the explanation of language change. In recent decades, several theories have dedicated themselves to this aim, stemming from different theoretical camps. The case of sound change seems specifically challenging in this context. Therefore, the aim of this study is to compare three influential language change theories (of structuralist, pragmatic and evolutionary descent) in their strategies to explain changes in the phonological system. We will consider breaking in Old English as an exemplary sound change and try to explain it with the respective theories. Firstly, we approach language change by characterizing it as a diachronic phenomenon that is observable as synchronic variation. Important discussions concerning the explanation of language change are outlined and subsequently the sample sound change breaking is presented, followed by a chapter on the premises of a language change theory. In the main part of the study, the three theories are presented and applied to breaking, thereby outlining major problems. The discussion summarizes aspects of the theories regarding their applicability and outlines major comparative remarks. The comparison of Wurzel’s (1994) markedness-theory, the theory of the “invisible hand” and the evolutionary theory by Croft shows that they all to a different degree abstract away from the research subject 'language'. Moreover, they all employ some kind of strategy to avoid teleological explanations. It is argued that the different properties of the theories depend largely on the definition of language that they are based on.
