Abstract:
L'article cherche à établir l'origine des emplois formatifs de arrière- et après-, ainsi que la manière dont ils se sont grammaticalisé, p. ex. dans arrière-cour ou après-match. L'étude de ces deux termes en ancien français montre que l'un et l'autre étaient polycatégoriels, qu'ils assumaient des emplois en tant que préposition, conjonction et particule, mais qu'ils avaient chacun un emploi préférentiel, après était fondamentalement une préposition alors qu'arrière était plutôt employé en tant qu'adverbe ou particule. L'étude montre que c'est bien l'emploi prépositionnel de après qui a permis son emploi en tant que formant, alors que l'émergence de arrière illustre un cas de substitution affixale. L'article permet par ailleurs de se poser la question du degré de grammaticalisation de ces deux éléments, et donc aussi celui de leur statut : sont-ils devenus, en français moderne, de véritables préfixes ou doivent-ils encore être considérés comme des préfixoïdes ? Mots-clés : préposition, préfixe, grammaticalisation, ancien français, français moderne ; This article looks into the origin of the uses of arrière- and après- as formatives, as well as into the way they have been grammaticalized, for instance in arrière-cour `backyard' and après-match `after match'. The analysis of the functioning of these two terms in Old French shows that they both were multi-categorial, since they could be used as a preposition, a conjunction or a particle, but that they each also had a preferential use: après was fundamentally a preposition, whereas arrière was rather used as an adverb or a particle. The paper then shows that in the case of après, it was its prepositional use that allowed it to emerge as a formative, whereas the use of arrière as a formative resulted from a substitution of the ancient prefix r(i)ere-. The paper furthermore raises the question of the degree to which both elements have been grammaticalized, and thus also of their status: have they turned into true prefixes in Modern French or should they still be conceived of as prefixoïds?
