Senses Working Out

Abstract:
This chapbook gathers together poems from a larger project of poems without titles, and, while it is intended to have a sense of a daybook, the poems are not dated. Thus, while grounded in the time of their composition, late 2010 in Adelaide, they also have an intentionally non-localised aspect, reinforced by the poems all being untitled, thus providing a sense of both local and general. The poems execute effects of being in an ever-changing urban environment by using unexpected language, imagistic movement and small events, that reach for an intensity of experience, though not a single dénouement. In other words, it is a series of poems which start and end in the middle of things, and contests the usual requirement for an arc-like structure of a book. It, rather, engages with the concept of the continuous present (and, in this, pays homage to the modernist ideas of Gertrude Stein, who was the inspiration for one of the poems) but moves these ideas through 21st century linguistic registers.
