The effects of information type (features vs. configuration) and location (eyes vs. mouth) on the development of face perception
In: ISSN: 0022-0965 ; EISSN: 1096-0457 ; Journal of Experimental Child Psychology ; https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-01423029 ; Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, Elsevier, 2014, 124, pp.36 - 49. ⟨10.1016/j.jecp.2014.01.001⟩ (2014)
Abstract: International audience ; The goal of the current study was to investigate the development offace processing strategies in a perceptual discrimination task. Children(7–12 years of age) and young adults were administered theFace Dimensions Task. In the Face Dimensions Task, participantswere asked to judge whether two simultaneously presented faceswere the ‘‘same’’ or ‘‘different’’. For the ‘‘same’’ trials, the two faceswere identical. For the ‘‘different’’ trials, the faces differed in eitherthe spacing between the eyes, the spacing between the nose andthe mouth, the size of the eyes, or the size of the mouth. The mainfinding was that 7- to 10-year-old children showed no difference intheir ability to discriminate differences in eye size and eye spacingbut showed a poor ability to discriminate differences in nose andmouth spacing and, to a lesser extent, mouth size. The developmentallag between nose–mouth discriminations and the otherfeatural and configural discriminations was reduced in older childrenand eliminated by young adulthood. These results indicatethat the type of face information (i.e., configural vs. featural) andits location (i.e., eye vs. mouth) jointly contribute to the developmentof face perception abilities.
