Sexe, gènere i llengua: anàlisi del llenguatge de la CUP
Abstract: Treball de fi de grau en Llengües Aplicades ; In recent years, non-sexist language has become part of the political parties’ speeches, especially of those representing the left wing. Without any doubt, the CUP (Candidatura d’Unitat Popular) is the political party that has broken all the molds as far as language is concerned. Not only do they use neutral words, but they also use the gender divide in speech, and the feminine as the generic gender. In this paper, we aim to examine the uses of gender in the language that the CUP uses, the reasons behind the criteria applied to these uses and, finally, the coherence of the speech. Therefore, we have based our work on three main corpuses: an oral corpus, a written corpus and two interviews. The first two corpuses have allowed us to collect and analyze data from different sources and genres, while the interviews have provided us with a deeper approach about the topic. Regarding the results, we have noted the use of non-sexist language for exclusively social purposes, which means that the linguistic approach is rarely taking into account. We have also remarked differences of usage depending on different variables, such as the platform used, the intention of the text, the word used or the member of the party who is speaking. Some of these incoherencies may stem from a lack of an advisory body within the political party. Should this body ever be created, further investigations would be needed to follow the development of uses of gender.
