"No biggie! No worries!" - an empirical investigation of the Australian English with a focus on its use of hypocoristics
Abstract:
; When listening to conversations between Australians, it can doubtlessly be noticed that their language contains certain features which distinguish their English from other varieties. Hence, the purpose of this thesis is to first of all provide an overview of the history of Australian English in order to get an understanding of how this fairly recent variety of English has established itself and developed from the time of its settlement until today. Secondly, this thesis will discuss features which are characteristic of Australian English and how they make it different from other varieties of English. In particular, the second chapter will focus on the phonetical, lexical and syntactical characteristics and will also investigate stress and intonation patterns of Australian English. A further aspect discussed in this chapter is the social and regional variation which occurs in the language of Australians. Owing to the fact that hypocoristics are a vital feature of Australian English, the third chapter will focus on hypocoristics in English in general and in Australian English, in particular. Since hypocoristic word forms represent cultural ideas prevalent in Australia, this chapter also focuses on concepts which are desired and valued in Australia. Building on this thorough analysis, the final chapter will cover the qualitative research undertaken for this thesis, which investigates the usage and function of hypocoristics as well as their representation of Australian cultural concepts.
