Abstract:
Die vorliegende Dissertation behandelt die Darstellung von schwarzen Frauen in den französischen Kunstwerken der zweiten Hälfte des XIX. Jahrhunderts – in den gemalten und fotografischen Bildern – und untersucht insbesondere die Entwicklung von Textualität in diesen semiotischen Produkten. Die Arbeit schneidet historische, soziopolitische, anthropologische und kunstwissenschaftliche Themen an, ist aber in erster Linie den medien- und textwissenschaftlichen sowie methodologischen Fragen gewidmet. Die semiotische Natur der Bilder wird in den Mittelpunkt gestellt und es werden Ansätze für die Bildanalyse und -interpretation ausgearbeitet, die auf der Hypothese gründen, dass Bilder, wie literarische Werke, als Texte im weiten Sinne des Wortes betrachtet werden können und ähnliche Prinzipien des Aufbaus und der Entwicklung des textuellen Gerüstes aufweisen. Die empirische Basis für unsere Untersuchungen bilden Gemälde und Fotografien französischer Autoren, die in der zweiten Hälfte des XIX. Jahrhunderts entstanden sind. Diese Epoche zeichnet sich durch die koloniale Expansion Frankreichs, vor allem in den nordafrikanischen Ländern, durch die Eroberung der neuen Territorien und die Etablierung der europäischen Lebensordnung in den Kolonien aus. Ein Großteil des aus 65 Bildern bestehenden Corpus, das in unserer Arbeit untersucht wird, ist der künstlerischen Strömung des Orientalismus zuzuordnen. Diese Bilder bieten eine romantische, etwas idealisierte Darstellung der Lebensweise, der Menschen, der Natur, der Architektur etc. in den orientalischen Ländern (als Orient werden nordafrikanische Länder, vor allem die des Maghrebs, sowie der westliche Teil der Türkei aufgefasst). Eine andere Art der Darstellung von schwarzen Frauen und im Allgemeinen, von exotischen Realien, entsteht durch die Fotografie – ein neues Medium, dass sich ab ca. 1850 zu einer selbstständigen visuellen Kunst entwickelt. Das grundlegende Charakteristikum der Fotografie – die wahrheitsgetreue Abbildung – bringt einen realistischen Aspekt in die Bilder, die das Leben in den fernen Ländern darstellen, ein. Somit bilden die Darstellungen von schwarzen Frauen in den gemalten und fotografischen Bildern eine spannende Grundlage für die Untersuchung der Entwicklung der Narration in den Bildern, der Schaffung von Konnotationen, der Gestaltung des thematischen Gerüstes etc. Um dem großen narrativen Potential der Bilder auf den Grund kommen zu können, bedarf es unserer Meinung nach einer Methode, die diese Werke als mediale Produkte betrachten und für die Bildanalyse und -interpretation Ansätze heranziehen würde, die von den Wissenschaften, die eine andere Art von Medien untersuchen, entwickelt wurden – beispielsweise, der Textlinguistik. Aufgrund von Methoden für die Analyse der geschriebenen Texte, die sich in der Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft etabliert haben, und in Anlehnung an bereits vorhandene Ansätze für die Bilduntersuchung wurde von uns ein Schema für Bildanalyse und -interpretation ausgearbeitet. Das Schema setzt sich aus vier Bereichen zusammen: dem Kontext der Bildentstehung, der Entwicklung der Kohärenz im Bild, dem Aufbau der Kohäsion im Bild und den Schlussfolgerungen. Im Rahmen des praktischen Teils unserer Arbeit werden die Analyse und Interpretation von sechs Bildern (drei Gemälden und drei Fotografien) französischer Maler bzw. Fotografen vorgestellt, die aufgrund vom ausgearbeiteten Schema vorgenommen wurden. Zum einen führen diese Analyse und Interpretation zu interessanten inhaltlichen Erkenntnissen und zeugen zum anderen davon, dass die Anwendung von sprach- und literaturwissenschaftlichen Prinzipien für die Untersuchung von Bildern möglich ist und dass somit Bildern, wie geschriebenen Texten, eine textuelle Basis zugrunde liegt. ; The present PhD thesis examines the representation of black women in French painting and photography of the second half of the 19th century, with a particular focus on the development of textuality in these visual semiotic products. The thesis raises historical, socio-political, anthropological and art-historical questions, although it primarily addresses issues of text analysis and media science as well as methodological issues. We emphasize the semiotic nature of pictures and elaborate approaches for their analysis and interpretation, based on the assumption that pictures, like literary works, can be considered as texts in the broad sense of the term, demonstrating inherently similar principles of organisation and development of the textual structure. The empirical basis for our studies is provided by paintings and photographs created by French artists during the second half of the 19th century. This was a period of French colonial expansion, primarily in North Africa, during which new territories were conquered and European ways of life established in the colonies. A large part of the corpus investigated in our thesis (65 pictures in total) presents examples of Orientalism, an artistic movement popular in the 19th century. These paintings offer romantic and idealistic representations of the way of life, inhabitants, natural world and architecture in Oriental countries, by which the countries of North Africa, especially the Maghreb, and Western Turkey are meant. A different manner of representing black women, and exotic realia in general, arose with photography, a new medium that experienced a dynamic development after 1850 to become an independent visual art form. The fundamental characteristic of photography, its truthful mode of representation, brings a realistic perspective to the images illustrating ways of life in faraway countries. Consequently, representations of black women in paintings and photographs provide a fascinating basis for examining the development of narration in pictures, the creation of connotations and the formation of thematic structures. In order to understand the significant narrative potential of pictures a method is required that considers these works of art as medial products, and which uses approaches for analysing and interpreting pictures that have been developed by the sciences to examine other media – for example, text linguistics. Based on the methods of analysing written texts that have become established in linguistics and literary studies, and following existing approaches for picture studies, we have elaborated our own scheme for the analysis and interpretation of pictures. This scheme is composed of four areas: the context of the picture’s creation, the development of its coherence, the structure of the cohesion and the conclusions. Within the scope of the practical part of our PhD thesis we present six pictures (three paintings and three photographs) by French artists, analysed and interpreted in accordance with the scheme we have devised. On the one hand, the analyses and interpretations reveal interesting information hidden in these works of art, and on the other, they demonstrate that it is possible to apply the principles of text analysis and literary studies to the investigation of pictures, and thus that pictures, like written texts, are organised on a textual basis.
