Abstract:
A debate on a specific vulgar meaning for female teachers registered in a Brazilian Portuguese dictionary in October 2019 led us to reflect on how dictionaries - as linguistic supports - establish gender issues semantically and discursively in Brazilian Portuguese. Thus, this work describes and analyzes (non) occurrences related to gender violence. For this, we take the widely disseminated on the internet and anonymous anecdote Injustices in the Portuguese language, which establishes semantic differences for noun phrases such as puto / puta, cão (dog) / cadela (bitch), galinha (ox/hen), among others. Through lexicographic consultation, we searched for records in different dictionaries, namely: Ferreira (2009), Houaiss (2009), Aulete Digital (2007), and inFormal (2014), which generated a codification and allowed a debate on sexism and linguistic violence. As a main result, we found that dictionaries, both online and printed ones, ratifies perjury to the female gender by registering derogatory meanings, whereas, in male gender nouns, they usually present the meaning registered in the anecdote, neutralizing negative aspects to the masculinity or not attributing a relationship to their sexuality.
