Abstract:
... : This paper investigates the effect of orthographic depth of language in reading and spelling after damage to fusiform gyrus. The Greek language is characterized by a dual character, it has shallow orthography in reading and deep orthography in spelling. KP - the patient studied here – suffered a stroke affecting mainly the right fusiform gyrus and the caudal part of the corpus callosum and presented initially a reading deficits which resolved 2 years later to a pronounced surface dysgraphia. The evaluation of the patient revealed problems in writing as well as reading difficulties in some lexical decision tasks. The results are interpreted within theories of a uniform spelling system or two separate systems processing for spelling. It is argued that reading and spelling may share the same neural structures but these processes can be differentially affected depending on the orthographic depth of each language. ...
