Abstract:
The present study engages with an established tradition in the literature concerning the description of possible effects of speaking style on prosodic features in general, and more specifically on the fundamental frequency (f0 hereafter). One of the goals here is to describe the effect of three speaking styles (spontaneous interview, sentence reading and word list reading) on statistical estimators of f0 variability (mean, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis). A second tradition in the previous literature we also address in this study is the statistical modeling of f0 contours, especially what theoretical statistical distribution best fits empirical f0 distributions. Although there is a widespread believe that f0 distributions are normally distributed, the few previous studies that actually run distribution fitting analysis failed to corroborate this claim. There has been no attempt that we know of to try to fit other types of theoretical distributions to f0 data. One of the goals of the present study ...
