; This paper aims to investigate how the low-class cariocas characters are linguistically represented in the movie Rio, through their speeches in the original audio in English and in the Brazilian Portuguese dubbing, and which translation strategies were used in the dubbing. The original DVD of the film Rio was used to collect data; the speeches were organized into three groups and transcribed into an Excel spreadsheet, divided into three columns: original English audio, dubbing in Brazilian Portuguese and the translation strategies used in the dubbing. In the analysis, it was concluded that the linguistic elements which characterize the diastratic variety of the low-class cariocas characters are not the same in the original audio compared to their dubbing. While paralinguistic traits represent a variety close to Black English in the English audio, in the Brazilian dubbing there is the occurrence of slangs, the use of the pronoun “tu” and its verbal deviant conjugation which does not correspond to Brazilian Portuguese standard language, as well as the use of other lexical choices to represent the variety of the low-class cariocas.
