	Abstract: This project consists of a qualitative and quantitative study of older Puerto Rican women's beliefs and knowledge of breast cancer and their perception of barriers to early detection practices. Using focus groups, the first phase involved gaining insight of knowledge and beliefs of breast cancer and early detection practices of 62 elderly women. Seven groups were formed according to level of education and area of residence. Content analysis highlighted areas of concern, prevalent themes and issues, and vocabulary used by the women. Focus groups provided insight for question wording, item development, and development of constructs to address culturally-sensitive issues. Results from focus groups were used to complement scientific literature on knowledge and detection practices to construct a questionnaire that is being validated among Puerto Rican women 65+. Validation will consist primarily of reliability procedure by test-retest and construct validity by factor analysis. The results will allow the questionnaire to be improved for a national survey of elderly women in Puerto Rico. A stratified sampling frame was constructed. Based on the findings, a culturally oriented breast cancer education program for women 65+ in Puerto Rico will be developed.
