Abstract:
L’étude des fonctions exécutives constitue un des principaux sujets de recherche à l’heure actuelle dans le domaine du bilinguisme. L’expérience unique des personnes bilingues associée au fait de devoir constamment jongler entre deux langues favoriserait le développement de certains processus cognitifs (p. ex. inhibition de la réponse, contrôle attentionnel, etc.) leur donnant ainsi un certain avantage. Cet avantage cognitif a cependant récemment été remis en question dû aux problèmes méthodologiques rencontrés dans plusieurs études le prônant et suite à l’impossibilité de reproduire leurs résultats. Dans le but de répondre à certaines de ces critiques, nous avons soumis 65 enfants (31 unilingues) de 4 à 6 ans à une nouvelle tâche courte et amusante visant à mesurer les fonctions exécutives. Les enfants ont été recrutés dans la communauté et testés à un Living Lab. La tâche était constituée de 20 essais durant lesquels les participants devaient sélectionner l’un des cinq objets ne correspondant pas à ce qui était représenté sur des cartes, en termes de forme et de couleur. La performance des participants a été analysée en tenant compte de leur expérience linguistique, de leur âge et de leur statut socio-économique. Les résultats ont indiqué un effet d’âge sur la performance. Aucune différence de performance attribuable à l’expérience linguistique des participants ou à leur statut socio-économique n’a été observée. Nos résultats ne fournissent donc pas de preuve pouvant soutenir la présence d’un avantage associé au fait de parler deux langues.
