|
Abstract:
; The fostering and preservation of multilingualism have been one of the major goals of the European Union, especially since the publishing of the White Paper Teaching and Learning. Towards the Learning Society by the European Commission in 1995. For the first time, the aim to develop proficiency in three European languages was formulated. Meanwhile, this phenomenon has also aroused much criticism in the context of migratory societies, mainly due to the misconception that being bi- or multilingual can be a hindrance to the academic achievement and professional advancement. On the other hand, numerous international schools are considered prestigious and elite; they are seen as the perfect example of living and preserving multilingualism. This different picture highlights the importance of political, economic, and socio-cultural factors in the process of evaluating one’s ability to speak more than one language. On a smaller scale, schools themselves and, above all, teachers decide which approach they are going to choose. This paper focuses on the teacher’s attitudes towards multilingualism in a German boarding school and how these are affecting their day-to-day teaching practice. The school is located in the town of Baja (South Hungary), set in a region known for its committed German-speaking minority. As a result, the UBZ (short for Ungarndeutsches Bildungszentrum) offers classes in German as a foreign and as a first language (more precisely, minority language), and the same applies for Hungarian. Furthermore, the students receive lessons in English as a foreign language. Depending on their background, education, teaching experience, as well as their own language skills, the teachers developed an individual approach towards multilingualism in their classrooms. The data assessment for this thesis was performed using guideline-based interviews with a sample of five teachers and four classroom observations, while the data analysis was done based on the Qualitative Content Analysis by Philipp Mayring (2015).
