Abstract:
version revue et modifiée d'un article paru en 2006 dans une revue d'orientalistes de Bucarest ; This paper is an attempt for solving the implicit or explicit contradictions between the dominant views which bear respectively on the essays and on the fiction of the most celebrated Hindi novelist of contemporary India. His essays are often considered as a purely Hindu worldview and the fiction as a Westernized creation (characters, intrigue or absence of a proper story). A sample of Nirmal Verma's aesthetic program within the narrative, as it occurs in his second novel, offers a very good insight, since it is both, implicitly, a philosophical/theoretical program and a practical illustration of that program involving the material (here scriptural) devices involved in the concrete realization of the artist's program (Ek cithrā sukh -- A Rag called Happiness in English translation). I will therefore start with an explanation of the content and formal features of this short sample, then elaborate on its main formal devices by analyzing some crucial extracts of the novels. I will finally relate the results of the analyses to the "philosophical" background displayed in Nirmal's essays, linking his crucial concepts (on time, history, myth, ego, self, indefiniteness, boundaries) with the so-called "oriental" character as evidenced in Said and Nandy. ; L'article vise à résoudre la contradiction implicite ou explicite entre les points de vue dominants qui portent respectivement sur les essais et les romans de Nirmal Verma, l'écrivain le plus célébré de l'Inde contemporaine. Ses essais sont souvent considérés comme l'expression d'une vision purement hindoue, alors que ses romans sont souvent critiqués pour leur occidentalisation, tant dans la forme que dans l'intrigue (ou son absence). Un échantillon du programme esthétique de Nrimal Verma pris dans la narration est un bon poste d'observation, puisqu'il constitue à la fois un programme théorique et philosophique et une illustration pratique de ce programme à travers le matériel scriptural (procédures stylistiques) impliqué dans la réalisation concrète du programme de l'artiste (Ek Cithra sukh, Un Bonheur en lambeaux en traduction française, Actes Sud). Je partirai donc d'une explication des traits formels et thématiques de ce bref échantillon, puis je développerai les principales procédures stylistiques qui le caractérisent en analysant quelques uns des épisodes cruciaux des romans. Enfin, je relierai les résultats de ces analyses à l'arrière plan 'philosophique' présenté dans les essais de Nirmal Verma, associant ses concepts clef (sur le temps, l'histoire, le mythe, le moi, le soi, l'indéfinitude, les limites) au caractère " oriental " tel qu'il est analysé chez Saïd et Nandy.
