Are multi-modal lexical representations retrieved in an all-or-none manner? ...
Crowley, Rebecca. - : Open Science Framework, 2021
Abstract: This study aims to determine whether holistic retrieval of associative memories extends to multimodal language learning. Recent evidence shows that multi-element (location, person, object) episodic events, which require hippocampal binding during encoding, are bound together in memory via pattern completion (Horner et al., 2013, 2014, 2014; Grande et al., 2019; Joensen et al., 2019). In contrast, item-based memories, which are supported by regions outside of the hippocampus (e.g. perirhinal cortex), are not retrieved holistically (Brady et al., 2013). Since lexical representations acquired in naturalistic settings are associated with rich multimodal information about word context (e.g. visual and auditory form of the word, semantic associations, and associated environmental sounds) and lexical representations are processed in the hippocampus (Duff & Brown-Schmidt, 2012), this study aims to determine whether multimodal lexical memories are retrieved in an all-or-none manner. Whether this prediction holds ...
