Abstract:
The impact that labels such as English Learner (EL) have on students can have unintended lasting effects. In this qualitative comparative case study, six participants tell their stories growing up either an EL or not and the impact it has led to in their profession and practice. This was done through pre-survey questions, semi-structured interviews with participants, classroom observations, and a final reflection. This led to a within-case study analysis that looked at each participant individually and followed with a cross-case analysis that examined all participants against one another. The findings showed the negative impact that being labeled an EL had-on teachers by discussing their resentment and experiences as EL students. In comparison, teachers that were never labeled showed no negative impact. All participants shared the commonality of developing lifelong learners regardless of their label.
