Abstract: This study will investigate adults’ novel object recognition, specifically the effects that different auditory signals presented with objects have on object encoding and subsequent recognition. Participants are presented with novel objects in an object recognition task, on a single trial they are briefly familiarised with a single object then at test they are presented with two objects and have to decide whether either object is the same as the one shown in familiarisation. Participants have to distinguish and select the correct object based on either categorical or individual level features and at different viewpoints from familiarisation. During familiarisation, objects will be presented with a linguistic signal (words) or a non-linguistic signal (tone sequences). We will investigate whether the auditory signals (words or tones) have different effects on the dimensions of the objects that are encoded and/or used for object recognition, as well as whether these signals differentially affect recognition of ...
