Abstract: International audience ; This contribution discusses medieval bilingualism (Latin/vernacular) from a theoretical point of view, based on (socio)linguistic research on bilingualism, and on the concepts of diglossia, grammatization, ieroglossia, and code-switching, against the backdrop of both the specific situation of medieval Tuscany and the wider European context. This leads us to suggest a tripartite classification of the languages in question (reference language, courtly language, vernacular language), taking into account the sociolinguistic factor and enabling us to evaluate the dynamic interaction between the languages in a better and more profound fashion.
