Abstract:
Over 130 years of memory research has shown that spacing instruction and practice over a longer period (distributed practice) improves retention. Despite the fact that spacing effects are well-accepted in the literature, it remains unclear how relative spacing, e.g., equal versus expanding spacing schedules, influences learning and retention, in particular with regard to second languages (L2s). In addition, due to concerns regarding the ecological validity of extant spacing research, little can be claimed as to the generalizability of previous findings to authentic L2 learning contexts. To address these gaps, we propose a large-scale study (n ≥ 1080) in an online environment to systematically examine the effects of relative and absolute spacing on the learning of an expanding item set of L2 vocabulary learning. ...
