Abstract:
In contrast to femininity, masculinity is an insecure social status. It can be easily lost and thus has to be re-established permanently (Vandello & Bosson, 2013). According to Precarious Manhood Theory (Bosson et al., 2009), men tend to engage in compensatory behavior in case their masculinity has been threatened. This involves behavior that has negative consequences for the men themselves (e.g., alcohol drinking: Fugitt & Ham, 2018), and others (e.g., aggressive behavior: Bosson et al., 2009; sexist and homonegative attitudes: Alonso, 2018; Glick et al., 2007; O’Connor et al., 2017). Although masculinity threat has been thoroughly investigated in the United States of America, studies focussing on other countries are rare. In our study, we focus on compensatory behavior that is associated with less negative consequences.
