Abstract:
Interaction between a human and a computer necessarily involves the use of a language in which the two can communicate. For application systems which are created under the Dialogue Management System (DMS), this language is usually an interaction language. Issues in the implementation of interaction languages are discussed, including language design, language specification and representation schemes, and language recognition. Components of an interaction language are classified into categories which are analyzed in terms of their specification needs. A model for interaction language specification is presented which depicts several inter-related submodels as a communication path between a dialogue author and an end-user. Because the dialogue author who is creating the user interface for application systems is not expected to be a language specialist, an automated tool to facilitate interaction language design, specification, representation, and parsing is being incorporated into the Author's Interactive Dialogue Environment (AIDE). An interactive example-based interface for syntax specification, Language-By-Example (LBE), guides the dialogue author at design-time in specifying an interaction language for an application system. An example of the use of LBE for defining command strings is presented. (Author)
